Physics Major

Please note that this schedule is only an example. Students should attempt to take the major requirements in the order shown. The general education requirements do not have to follow the order shown, but students must be sure to complete each requirement. Electives are optional.

Dual Degree Engineering Concentration

Physics majors with the Dual-Degree Concentration have a less flexible schedule with fewer general electives. Dual-Degree students should take MATH 280- Linear Algebra, PHYS 252 - Statics, and CMSC 160 & 162 - Introduction to Algorithmic Design. The general education requirements do not have to follow the order shown, but students must be sure to complete each requirement. The number of credits taken during the regular semester can be reduced by electing to take summer school courses.

Minor Requirements

Students interested in pursuing a physics minor should contact the Area Coordinator of the physics program (Dr. Michelle Parry). No grade below C- is acceptable in minor courses.

The minor must include:

  • 8-semester hours general physics
  • 12 semester hours advanced physics courses or chemistry courses from the following: PHYS 252, PHYS 260, PHYS 300-400 level courses, CHEM 324, or CHEM 401
  • Total: 20 credit hours.

Note: MATH 261, 262 is required for most of these courses.
