CEHHS Awards

Rust And Centennial Scholarships

Martha Sinclair Rust & Mary Sinclair Rust Memorial Education Scholarship and the Longwood University Teacher Education Centennial Scholarship require that a department chair in consultation with the faculty nominate you. Both scholarships are awarded to rising seniors who have completed 75 school hours and have a minimum 3.25 GPA.


HRK Department Awards

Olive T. Iler Award

This award is given yearly to a rising senior majoring in physical education in the teaching option. The student must have been a student at Longwood University for five (5) semesters and must have made plans to complete the degree at Longwood University. The recipient must possess outstanding personal qualities, high ideals, good scholarship and professional ethics.

Eleanor W. Bobbitt Award

This award is given yearly to a full time junior or senior physical education major in the teaching option. The student must have attended Longwood University at least two years, have a 2.75 overall GPA and a 3.00 major GPA. The student must be outstanding in professionalism as demonstrated by attendance and/or membership in student and professional organizations, and an active participant in service projects. This award is renewable.

Frances Anthony Meyer

The Frances Anthony Meyer scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to a student seeking teacher licensure and intending to teach physical education. Preference will be given to student-athletes. This scholarship is renewable if all requirements are met.


Therapeutic Recreation Awards

Linda Marie Hall Mahorney Scholarship

This award is given yearly to a full-time therapeutic recreation student or an incoming freshman who has declared therapeutic recreation as his/her major. The recipient must have at least a 3.0 GPA at Longwood or high school (if an incoming freshman). The recipient will demonstrate personal attributes such as dependability, responsibility, and commitment to the profession. Additionally, the recipient will demonstrate evidence of campus involvement and/or Therapeutic Recreation Student Organization (TRO).


State and National Awards

Major students selected are eligible to receive the following awards:

Virginia AHPERD Student Recognition Award:

  • Overall GPA 2.8
  • Major GPA 3.0
  • Attendance at a previous professional convention (if an athlete is being considered, attendance at a previous VAHPERD/professional convention may be waived if a varsity game was scheduled for the convention date).
  • Participation in intramural or varsity athletics for a minimum of one (1) year.
  • Member of the student major club with active involvement. The organization's advisor will determine involvement.

Frances A. Mays Scholarship Award:

  • Overall GPA 2.8
  • Major GPA 3.0
  • Senior student majoring in health, physical education, recreation, or dance.
  • Shall have been a student for three (3) years at a Virginia college/university offering a degree in health, physical education, recreation, or dance, and shall have made plans to complete the degree at that college/university.
  • Attendance at a previous professional convention (if an athlete is being considered, attendance at a previous VAHPERD/professional convention may be waived if a varsity game was scheduled for the convention date).
  • Member of the student major club with active involvement. The organization's advisor will determine involvement.

SHAPE America Major Of The Year

  • Be a current SHAPE America Member
  • Be on track toward a degree in an HPERD field
  • Be a junior or senior
  • Have a GPA of a 3.0 or higher
  • Provide a service to school or community (3-5 contributions) for a minimum of two years during undergraduate career
