Student Organizations

Organizations within the Department of Music are national, professional organizations that directly serve students through the college years and help prepare them for careers in music.

American Choral Directions Association (ACDA)

ACDA is a national, Professional organization for school, community, and church choir directors. Our student chapter fosters and promotes artistic and spirited choral experiences for all singers on campus and encourages the professional development of student directors, executive board members, singers, and leaders within our choral community. We support travel and recruitment by our auditioned choirs, who sing off campus to promote the intelligent understanding of choral music as an important medium of artistic expression and to bring awareness of musical opportunities for students of all majors on Longwood's campus.

National Association for Music Education (NAfME)

NAfME is a national, professional organization affiliated with the National Education Association. Our local student chapter is one of hundreds on college campuses throughout the country. It is also affiliated with the Virginia Music Education Association. NAfME strives to increase and maintain an interest in and knowledge of music education by acquainting students with the privileges and responsibilities of the profession, to assist the school and music organizations in various projects, and to provide opportunity for contacts with leaders in the field. The college chapter offers programs, discussions, and concerts for experience and enjoyment. Music Education concentrations should consider membership in the organization a must all the years they are in college. The biannual national conference of NAfME was held in Washington, D.C., in March, 2000.
