The 1839 Experience is a great way to communicate with other new Lancers and your Peer Mentor before New Lancer Days begin in August.

The 1839 Experience

Throughout the summer, you'll explore a variety of topics related to Longwood life through The 1839 Experience, an online discussion involving other new students in your Longwood Seminar (LSEM) group. Discussions are facilitated and moderated by your Peer Mentor.

To access The 1839 Experience, you'll use Canvas, an online learning tool, to discuss academics, campus involvement, residential housing, campus services and resources, the First Year Reading Experience and the Farmville community.

The 1839 Experience begins following your summer Orientation session and continues until New Lancer Days begin in August. Each week, your Peer Mentor will post a discussion topic to initiate communication among your LSEM group. The discussion topics are designed to answer questions you may have about Longwood and to help with your transition to college life. This is a great way to learn about Longwood and life as a Lancer while getting to know others in your LSEM group -- you will benefit by participating often!

Discussions will be monitored by the Office of First Year Experience and Family programs to ensure that Peer Mentors are fulfilling their roles and responsibilities and to determine which topics generate the most discussion and which areas are challenging.
