It takes a community effort to make sure our campus is a safe place to be. You should feel safe here, but we do our part to take precautions for your benefit.

Campus

  • We position blue light emergency phones across campus in case you have an emergency. Courtesy phones are stationed at residence halls' primary entrances.
  • Our text messaging and email alert system is provided through Roam Secure, a national company with servers on both coasts in the event of a regional disaster.
  • Fire Protection Systems (fire alarms, sprinklers,…) are tested and maintained so that you can be sure that they will work if you ever need them.
  • We conduct two fire drills every semester to ensure that you and your friends know what to do and where to go should a real fire occur.
  • Designated smoking areas are provided for individuals who wish to smoke or vape.
  • Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) are provided on the main floor of every Longwood building.
  • An escort service is usually available to walk with a student back to his or her residence hall, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
  • Areas of Rescue in Longwood buildings provide a haven where a mobility impaired individual can communicate with Longwood dispatchers while awaiting rescue during a fire event.

Residence Halls

  • Our sworn and trained campus police force monitors electronic access doors and fire systems 24/7.
  • Students enter their residence hall with their student ID via an electronic card reader. Lost student IDs are disabled immediately after reported missing. Replacements are available for a $15 fee.
  • Photo student ID cards are also used for entry into the dining hall and for use of the library.
  • For student rooms and suites, coded keys are stamped with "State of VA Do Not Duplicate." If you lose your room key, we replace the lock for a fee.
  • Residence hall doors have peepholes for personal surveillance.
  • The State Fire Marshall inspects approximately 20% of residence hall rooms each year to ensure that room occupants are living safely.
