Alec R. Hosterman joined the Longwood community in the fall of 2014 as an Assistant Professor in the Communication Studies department. He teaches courses in the public relations concentration including Public Relations Writing, Public Relations Research, Public Relations Campaigns. In addition, he teaches courses in Digital and Social Media Technologies, Communication Ethics, Senior Seminar, and others. Alec also coordinates and runs LAMP (Longwood Academy for Event and Meeting Planning), a certificate granting workshop for aspiring and established event planners. Hosterman regularly consults with local profit and nonprofit organizations.

Before Longwood, Alec spent 13 years teaching at Indiana University South Bend in South Bend, Indiana as Senior Lecturer and chair of the Communication Studies department. To gain professional experience which he regularly infuses in his classroom, he worked in the public relations department of Playing Mantis, Inc. in South Bend, Indiana. Playing Mantis was a national toy collectibles manufacturer that specialized in producing die-cast cars, model kits, action figures, and memorabilia. He maintained the company’s websites, wrote and created promotional materials for the sales staff, and maintained the digital photography collection.

When not on in the classroom or working with student interns, you will find Alec engaged in his other favorite obsession: photography. With over 25 years of experience behind the lens, he enjoys both digital and analogue photography. Most recently, his photographs of the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, VA were exhibited at the Longwood Center for Visual Arts and also the Richmond Holocaust Museum. Alec also exhibited his work at the Third Street Brewery in Farmville, VA and occasionally teaches an introductory digital photography course at Red Door 104.

Alec holds a Ph.D. in Technical Communication and Rhetoric from Texas Tech University, an M.A. in Speech Communication from Ball State University, and a B.A. in Communication from Aquinas College.
