Dr. Charles Kinzer joined the music faculty at Longwood in 1992. In addition to teaching music history, world music, and applied saxophone, he directs the university jazz ensemble.
Dr. Kinzer earned degrees in music performance from Auburn University and the University of Alabama, and a PhD in Musicology from Louisiana State University. His research specialties include New Orleans jazz and early brass band music.
As a saxophonist, Dr. Kinzer has appeared with the Temptations and Four Tops, Barbara Mandrell, and Pete Fountain, and he has recorded with the celebrated country & western musician Roy Clark. Kinzer has performed throughout Virginia since 1994 with his regular group, the Southside Jazz Quintet.
Kinzer is also active as a classical performer. In October of 2016, he and his wife, pianist Lisa Kinzer, performed and recorded Gordon Ring’s Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano.
As a musicologist, Dr. Kinzer has published articles in the Journal of Band Research, American Music, The Black Music Research Journal, Second Line, and the Saxophone Symposium. He has presented papers at conferences of the Louisiana Historical Society, the Sonneck Society for American Music, and the American Musicological Society.
Recent projects include a series of analytical essays and transcriptions of jazz solos by Stan Getz, and three presentations of research into the ways that acoustic properties of woodwind instruments can be incorporated into musical pedagogy for the Acoustical Society of America.
