Dylan Campbell ’19 plans to go to law school when he completes his political science degree, but until then he has found an outlet in the Office of Admissions for his drive to help others.
Campbell has given dozens of campus tours to prospective Lancers since becoming a Longwood Ambassador during his freshman year. Last spring, he took on additional responsibilities in a part-time paid position, managing the campus tour program and lending a hand wherever it’s needed in admissions.
“College admissions is a passion of mine because you play a part in putting someone in a spot where they can grow for four years,” he said. “Some people think they can’t go to college, due to grades or finances, so it’s rewarding to make that a reality. I’ve seen people get accepted and cry about it. That’s powerful.”
Campbell’s own ability to grow has been made possible through several privately funded Longwood scholarships. He is currently the recipient of the Class of 1962 Scholarship, Marge M. Connelly Scholarship, Caroline Ferguson Irons ’42 Scholarship and Longwood Provost Scholarship.
“Scholarship aid has been critical in my being here,” he said. “Thanks to being in the Honors College and my scholarships, I’ve found opportunities here that I wouldn’t have found anywhere else. That’s what I try to convey on my tours.
“I love my job, and the tours are always fun. It’s rewarding to relieve the anxieties of parents and students, who always wonder, ‘Where do I go to college? Will I fit in here?’ I want them to see college not as intimidating but as a huge opportunity. It’s all about helping someone make these big decisions.”
Campbell, who is minoring in homeland security, is a member of the Cormier Honors College and the Honor Board, is a junior marshal and has a 3.7 grade-point average. He plans to attend law school and become a defense attorney working in civil law, or possibly work in human-rights or international law.
“Dylan is a go-getter who throws himself into any challenge,” said Jessi Znosko, his honors adviser. “He has taken on a lot of leadership and done well with it. He was the only student coordinator of the annual Honors Preview Event last year, which was a huge success.”
Dean of Admissions Jason Faulk praised Campbell’s “genuine ability to connect with prospective students and families. He is always willing to go the extra mile to provide a unique college visit. He is Longwood’s number one fan and isn’t afraid to share his excitement, enthusiasm and experiences from a student’s perspective. As I told him, he would make a great admissions counselor.”
If a law career doesn’t work out, that’s something he would consider. “No matter what I do, I want to help people, which I get from my mom,” said Campbell, who is from Stuarts Draft.
