Longwood nursing students are putting their skills to use around the globe. Nine students and two professors spent ten days in Ecuador this August, administering care to underprivileged communities in the capital city of Quito and in outlying villages in the Cuyabeno region of the Amazon.
The students administered eye and ear exams and other basic health procedures, including checking vital signs and blood work in order to assess common problems in the region. They’ll return in subsequent years to continue their work and target regional problems like intestinal parasites. "A lot of the population in Ecuador are disadvantaged and have extremely little exposure to basic health care," said Longwood professor April Shular, who accompanied the students abroad along with fellow professor Julie Ross. "This is great experience for the students, to be exposed to a world they aren’t used to.
