The string section of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra will present a side-by-side workshop and mini-concert Saturday, April, 5, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. in Longwood University’s Jarman Auditorium.
The event, open to anyone who plays an orchestral stringed instrument at the intermediate level or above, is an opportunity to play alongside the professional musicians of the Richmond Symphony in a casual atmosphere. There is a $10 fee.
People can register by completing a brief online registration by April 1. Those without Internet access should call Longwood’s Music Department at 434-395-2504.
The workshop will consist of a rehearsal period from 2:30 to 4:15 and a run-through mini-performance at 4:30. It is modeled after the RSO’s popular "Come-and-Play" events in Richmond, which often draw hundreds of amateur string players, young and old.
The music will be conducted by Erin Freeman, the RSO’s associate conductor, who conducted the portion of the Jan. 31 Longwood concert that featured a collaboration between the Richmond Symphony and Longwood’s Camerata Singers. Sheet music will be made available to participants well ahead of time.
The event has been made possible by a gift from the late Dr. John Randall Cook, a 1952 Longwood alumnus who was among the university’s most generous benefactors and had a love of the arts.
