Longwood University’s Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensembles will combine for a free concert Tuesday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Jarman Auditorium.
Student soloists with the Wind Symphony include sophomore Leah Parr and senior Andrew Bentley, both chosen to perform by winning the student soloist and conductor competitions last fall. Parr will play Beethoven’s Piano Concerto #2 in B-flat Major, op. 19, movement 3 "Rondo-Molto Allegro," and Bentley will conduct Caccia and Chorale by Clifton Williams. The 50-member Wind Symphony is conducted by Dr. Gordon Ring of Longwood’s music faculty.
Jazz Ensemble B, directed by Andrew Brock, a Longwood alumnus who teaches middle school band in Chesterfield County, will play tunes by Neal Hefti, Miles Davis and Kenny Dorham.
Jazz Ensemble A, directed by Dr. Charles Kinzer, chair of Longwood’s Department of Music, will perform well-known jazz works "Spain" by Chick Corea, "Royal Garden Blues" by Joe "King" Oliver and "Chameleon" by Herbie Hancock. Student soloists with this ensemble include Bentley, Lucas Whirley, Cody Leonard and Tyler Gage.
