It’s a spring filled with screwball comedy that will leave audiences erupting in laughter and a musical revue that will take theater-goers around the world at Longwood.
The Longwood Theatre spring season kicks off with A Masterpiece of Comic…Timing!, directed by Jordan Stroud ’19, a theatre major who has appeared in many plays during his Longwood career, including Translations, Table Manners and Macbeth. The constant stream of punchlines is punctuated by crazy action on-stage as the story follows the life of a depressed playwright trying to write a comedic masterpiece.
A Masterpiece of Comic…Timing! will have a five-day run Feb. 20-24. Evening shows begin at 7 p.m., with matinees beginning at 2 p.m. on Feb. 23 and 24.
Bruce Speas, associate professor of theatre history and directing, will take the helm of the department’s April production: Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill: A Musical Voyage. This musical journey follows Weill’s life writing musicals first in Germany, then in New York, and features songs co-written by such luminous names as Langston Hughes, Ira Gershwin, Ogden Nash, and Bertolt Brecht.
The musical will be performed April 10-14. Evening shows begin at 7 p.m.
The theatre department’s season will end in traditional fashion, with the 13th annual Zero to 60 Playwrighting Festival, which features numerous short productions. The festival is a mainstay at Longwood, and regularly features student directors.
