The traditional large-scale undergraduate commencement ceremony that had been scheduled for Oct. 10 was canceled. For families who had longstanding plans to travel to Farmville to celebrate the milestone, President Reveley worked with class members to organize a series of recognition events — limited to 15 students at a time and two family members. Dear Longwood Class of 2020:
Farmville has missed you.
Your “adopted” hometown is not the same without you—it is eerily quiet without your smiles and energy.
Especially this week. This would have been your last as student residents of Farmville—the week prior to graduation, a week you have anticipated for the last four years. It would have been a celebration of the culmination of years of hard work and marked your passage from college student to the workforce.
All that hard work, all those accomplishments are more than the last two months—don’t let it define your college experience. Please cherish your achievements and treasure the memories and time in our community.
We will still salute you this week, celebrate you, honor your many achievements. And we look forward to celebrating with you and your families when you return to Farmville this fall for an in-person graduation.

2021 Commencement
Virtual ceremonies celebrate Class of 2020, and President Reveley welcomes small groups of graduates to his home at Longwood House
To be sure, it was nothing like usual, but through a series of virtual events Longwood honored both undergraduate and graduate student members of the Class of 2020. And on Oct. 10, President Taylor Reveley IV arranged in partnership with the undergraduate Class of 2020 to welcome small groups of graduates and families who had long planned to be in town for the weekend, for a series of personal recognition events at his home outdoors at Longwood House.
Degrees were officially conferred on the Class of 2020 last May, but over the weekend of Oct. 9-10 Longwood shared video events to celebrate and mark the occasion.
