Environmental Protection Policy

Longwood University's first policy addressing the natural environment was approved by the Board of Visitors in September 2009. The Environmental Protection Policy serves as the guiding principle for the entire Environmental Management System (EMS) and provides the framework for establishing goals to address the institution's impact on the environment.

What is an EMS?

An EMS is a set of processes that enable an organization to identify, control, and reduce the environmental impact of its everyday business operations. The EMS will initially encompass the Heating Plant, Physical Plant, and Landscaping and Grounds Management.

By implementing an EMS in the specified departments, Longwood will include environmental stewardship in the daily responsibilities of employees, students and vendors, holding everyone accountable for the institution's compliance and sustainability efforts.
