Dr. Shannon Salley, Department Chair of the Social Work and Communication Sciences and Disorders, said “the goal of the IPE event was to encourage students to begin thinking about how everyone works together as a team, regardless of the profession. I think that goal was accomplished based on student feedback.”
Students participated in the “Exploring Stereotypes and Assumptions” activity and discussed preconceived assumptions about different professions.
Students shared that they found it valuable to be placed into groups with various professions as it allowed everyone to share their expertise. It was also helpful for “getting rid of preconceived notions about what people do and do not bring to the table.”
Dr. Jenn Cuchna, Assistant Professor of Athletic Training and Kinesiology, said, “As one of the event planners and a breakout session moderator, I have also gained valuable information about all the professions involved in both iterations we have completed with students in the past two years. I only see this event becoming more successful and a hallmark event for the CEHHS in future years.”
Dr. Salley concluded the event post-questionnaire and evaluation, “The IPE committee worked tirelessly to coordinate this event, and I look forward to continuing to work with this group to keep improving and growing the Interprofessional Education experience here at Longwood.”
